_n order to integrate two consolidation theories of Terzaghi’s consolidation theory and Mesri’s secondary compression theory and to identify a model suitable for analyzing stress-strain behavior over time, numerical analysis on consolidation tests were conducted using a modified cam-clay model and a soft soil creep model and the following conclusions were obtained. The results of numerical analysis applying the theory that a linear proportional relationship is established between the void ratio at logarithmic scale and the permeability coefficient at logarithmic scale is better agreement with the result of oedometer test than the results of applying constant hydraulic conductivity. The modified cam-clay model is a model that does not include secondary compression, but the slope of the normal consolidation line corresponding to the compression index of the standard consolidation test includes secondary compression, so the actual settlement curve over time is lower than the predicted value through numerical analysis. It always gets smaller. Other previous studies that applied Terzaghi’s consolidation theory to consolidation test analysis showed the same results and were cross-confirmed. The soft soil creep model, which includes secondary compression in the theory, showed good agreement in all sections including secondary compression in the consolidation test results. It was judged appropriate to use a soft soil creep model when performing numerical analysis of soft clay ground.

This study aims to contribute to efficient paddy field water management by developing an IoT-based automatic paddy inlet that can consider water level changes according to variations in the supplied water quantity through irrigation channels. This IoT-based automatic paddy inlet not only ensures water level changes based on the supply of irrigation water but also secures irrigation efficiency. The effectiveness and efficiency of the developed IoT-based automatic paddy inlet were presented to contribute to efficient paddy field water management. As a result, the IoT-based automatic paddy inlet demonstrated the capability to maintain the optimal water level in the paddy field. Particularly, it exhibited up to 18.4% higher water resource usage efficiency compared to conventional paddy inlet, emphasizing the IoT-based automatic paddy inlet’s advantage in terms of water resource usage.

The long-term monitoring of the Soyang Lake’s water quality, covering 25% of the North Han River watershed, is crucial for effective management of both lake water quality and pollution sources in the broader region. This study utilized continuous monitoring data from the front of the Soyang Dam spanning 2003 to 2022, aiming to analyze trends and provide foundational insights for water quality management. Results revealed a slightly poor grade (IV) for total nitrogen (T-N) in both surface and mid-depth layers, indicating a need for concentrated T-N management. Trend analyses using the Mann-Kendall test and Sen’s Slope depicted a decreasing trend in total phosphorus (T-P) for both layers, attributed to non-point source pollution reduction projects initiated after the Soyang Lake’s designation as a pollution control area in 2007. The LOWESS analysis showed a T-P increase until 2006, followed by a decrease, influenced by the impact of Typhoon Ewiniar in that year. This 20-year overview establishes a comprehensive understanding of the Soyang Lake’s water quality and trends, allowing for a seasonal and periodical analysis of water quality changes. The findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring and management strategies to address evolving water quality issues in the Soyang Lake over time.

This study conducted an assessment of potential impacts on the drought in agricultural reservoirs using the recently proposed SSP (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways) scenarios by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). This study assesses the potential impact of climate change on agricultural water resources and infrastructure vulnerability within Gyeongsangnam-do, focusing on 15 agricultural reservoirs. The assessment was based on the KRC (Korea Rural Community Corporation) 1st vulnerability assessment methodology using RCP scenarios for 2021. However, there are limitations due to the necessity for climate impact assessments based on the latest climate information and the uncertainties associated with using a single scenario from national standard scenarios. Therefore, we applied the 13 GCM (General Circulation Model) outputs based on the newly introduced SSP scenarios. Furthermore, due to difficulties in data acquisiton, we reassessed potential impacts by redistributing weights for proxy variables. As a main result, with lower future potential impacts observed in areas with higher precipitation along the southern coast. Overall, the potential impacts increased for all reservoirs as we moved into the future, maintaining their relative rankings, yet showing no significant variability in the far future. Although the overall pattern of potential impacts aligns with previous evaluations, reevaluation under similar conditions with different spatial resolutions emphasizes the critical role of meteorological data spatial resolution in assessments. The results of this study are expected to improve the credibility and accuracy formulation of vulnerability employing more scientific predictions.

This study assessed the efficiency of reducing soil erosion and suspended sediment through the restoration of alpine unauthorized and illegally cultivated fields, using the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model in the Mandae District. The results showed that in Scenario 5, which involved restoring unauthorized and illegal fields within forests, along rivers (banks), and in ditch areas were restored to their original land categories, achieved the highest efficiency in reducing average annual soil erosion and suspended sediment, with reductions of 8.1% and 4.5%, respectively. In particular, it was confirmed that the restoration of unauthorized and illegal fields within forested areas has a significant impact. This demonstrated that the restoration of unauthorized and illegal agricultural fields can substantially reduce the soil erosion and suspended sediment attributable to non-point source pollution. Our findings highlight the importance of managing these unauthorized and illegal agricultural activities in developing sustainable strategies within non-point source pollution management areas. This study is expected to provide important basic data to effectively establish water quality improvement strategies in the region of non-point source pollution management.
